for the week of May 4, 2008

Pentecost Sunday, May 11th
The word “Pentecost” means fiftieth day. Pentecost is a Jewish festival that falls on the fiftieth day of Passover. In Biblical times, Jews from all over the Roman Empire gathered in Jerusalem for the festivities of Pentecost. On Pentecost, after Jesus resurrection- ten days after Jesus had ascended into heaven- the apostles and other believers were gathered together in one place, when they were suddenly empowered by the Holy Spirit to preach the gospel. They went out into the crowds and attracted attention by preaching in the native languages of all the people present. This created quite a stir, so Peter seized the opportunity to address the crowd, preached Jesus death and resurrection, and won several thousand converts.

God’s presence is available today to all who believe in him. We encourage you to spend time in the scriptures by using the attached bookmark. Listen patiently as God speaks to you, through the Holy Spirit, so you might become the spark that ignites the flame in others.

Guest Conductor
The choir is welcoming a guest conductor, Dr. Bridgett Sweet, for a free workshop on Wednesday, May 14th at 6:15 pm. She will be conducting the choir in a special anthem on Sunday, May 18th. (We have already begun working on the anthem.) ALL SINGERS (who wish to participate in the workshop) ARE WELCOME to practice with us.

Music at Pages and Prayers
Are you enjoying the songs in worship this morning? Would you like to be able to have these songs at home to inspire you throughout the week? Did you know Pages & Prayers has many of these songs on CDs?  And best of all, did you know that all CDs are 20% off throughout the month of April?

Sunshine Meals
Three families in our congregation are expecting a child. The Sunshine Meals Ministry provides meals for families in our congregation during the first few weeks of their baby’s birth. If you are interested in providing a meal for the Marls, a sign-up sheet is located at the registration counter in the lobby. If you have any questions, you may contact Abby at 668.0724.

Graduation Sunday
We will be recognizing our 2008 graduates at the 9:30 am worship service on June 1st. All high school grads and their families are invited to join us for a short brunch before and following the 9:30 service. If you would like to be a part of the recognition, please contact Ron by April 30th. Look for more information to come. Thanks!

Monthly Book Club
Pages & Prayers would like to start a monthly reading club. Each month, participants would be invited to read a Christian book and then meet to discuss the book. The bookstore is looking for someone who would be willing to facilitate this discussion. This would require minimal preparation - many Christian books already have discussion questions prepared at the back of the book. If this is something you might be interested in doing - contact Diane Lantzy.

Sunday Morning Adult Bible Study
As a devoted follower of Christ, the Apostle John has given us a personal and powerful look at Jesus Christ, the eternal Son of God. Please join us Sunday mornings in the lounge (preschool wing next to the bookstore) at 9:30am, over the next several months, as we share an in-depth study of the Gospel of John. Even if you can’t make it every week, you are always welcome. Come, bring a friend, and enjoy the warmth of the coffee, the fellowship, and Jesus’ love.

GIVE OUR TROOPS “A Little Piece of Home
Tiffany Funeral Home is offering a program in which you can provide items in a care package (i.e. toiletries, goodies and clothing) for our troops. And, to make it easier, the funeral home will supply the box, customs forms, instructions and will also pay for the shipping. Packages are available in the church office; fill the box and then drop it off at the church office.
